Today we went through the teaching plan for effective internet research and the teacher explained in detail the tasks we had to complete.
After that, we went through topics such as blogs, wikis, forums, as well as full text documents which can have complete books in their database.
I learnt two new things today, that wikis could be edited by anyone in the cyber world. Previously, I thought that it was a web page in which only registered invited experts would post information. Also, I heard of the term RSS feeds, however did not know the meaning. What RSS feeds would do is automatically pull information and post it on a website making it convenient for the user to read.
Websites can be categorized into 3 categories, organizational, personal and subject-based websites.
Their definition
*Organizational website:
A collection of web pages which is are created and maintained by many people, /an organization. It contains interesting facts and contact info, it also has links to other relating websites. One good example is the SBS transit website, it has information and facts about the organization and does not sell items.
*Personal website:
It is a website which is created and maintained by an individual who created it out of personal interests and would write on his/her specific subject of interest.
*Subject based websites:
These websites would have a particular subject focus and might include both organizational and personal sites. Some examples of subject based websites.
-Business website: It can be seen by prices, product catalogue as well as a check out cart button. One good example is Amazon.com which is an online business website.
-Entertainment website: It is a website which has information that entertains people with juicy gossip and celebrity news.
-Advocacy website: It is a website to promote a cause. One would find advocacy messages such as “join us in this cause!”, a good example is the “human rights watch” website.
-News website: usually managed by a news company to share online what they have in print for the day, some examples are Today newspaper and Straits times. Some people prefer to use only online news websites rather than buying a newspaper as it is more convenient and cheaper in the long run.
*are those things that may come out in the test, to be noted when revising for it. J
